Suffolk native William J. Smith has been recognized as one of Virginia’s rising leaders, earning a place on the Virginia Business 2026 Forty Under 40 list, a prestigious statewide honor celebrating emerging leaders for their career success, community impact, and leadership across the Commonwealth.

Smith, 30, is among the youngest individuals selected for this year’s recognition. The annual Forty Under 40 program highlights professionals who are making meaningful contributions in their industries while actively strengthening their communities.

For Smith, this recognition reflects a lifetime commitment to the place he calls home.

Born and raised in Suffolk, Smith continues to live and serve in the community that helped shape his values. In his role with Dominion Energy’s community engagement team, he works closely with nonprofit organizations, civic leaders, and community partners to support charitable initiatives, strengthen neighborhoods, and invest in opportunities across Hampton Roads.

His dedication to public service extends well beyond his professional role.

Smith currently serves as a Commissioner on the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, where he helps guide housing and redevelopment initiatives that impact families and neighborhoods throughout the city.

He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia, supporting programs that empower fathers and strengthen families across Hampton Roads.

A strong believer in service and civic engagement, Smith is also an active member of Daniel Lodge No. 004 in Suffolk, where he participates in community outreach efforts, including seasonal service projects and holiday food donations for local families.

Reflecting on the recognition, Smith emphasized that the honor represents the community that raised him.

“I’m honored to be recognized among so many talented leaders across Virginia,” Smith said. “But I’m even more proud of where I come from. Suffolk shaped who I am, and I carry those lessons with me in everything I do.”

The Virginia Business Forty Under 40 honorees will be recognized on May 5 at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond and featured in the May 2026 issue of Virginia Business Magazine.

For Smith, the recognition is not just about past accomplishments—it’s about continuing the work of building stronger communities, expanding opportunity, and ensuring that Suffolk continues to thrive for future generations.
